CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Gringo Gulch Butcher Command Center, San Bosco, San José, Costa Rica

Soto called Shaw to his office.

“Close the door.”

“What’s up, boss?”

“Looks like you’re getting your way,” Soto said, shuffling papers around his desk, in his customary nervous tell.

“How’s that?”

“Degnan reached out to the DCM about your request for a profiler and set the ball rolling. The FBI has agreed to send down Special Agent Needham to join our team.”

“Seriously?” Shaw couldn’t believe it. He hoped to at least have her as a part of the team officially in some virtual capacity, like they had been doing for the past few weeks. But she was going to be physically part of the investigation.

“Erin Heaton’s parents were already pushing for the FBI to get involved. I’m sure like most Americans they think we’re third-world clowns.”

Shaw said nothing since it was probably an accurate assessment, but he wasn’t about to judge grieving parents, especially if they were applying the pressure he needed to get the help he wanted, anyway. He could handle being looked down on by Americans. It wouldn’t be the first time that happened.

“The Heatons’ congressman got involved and when word got back to the ambassador of your request, she was all over it. The good ambassador is not here because of her diplomacy skills, but because she’s good friends with the president and raises a ton of money for his political campaigns. So she reached out to the POTUS himself, who sicced the Secretary of State onto the Department of Justice and the FBI and, voilà, you have your profiler on her way.”

Soto didn’t sound pleased with the news. So Shaw wasn’t about to explain himself. Just keep the questions to a minimum, he thought.

“When does she arrive?”

“Tomorrow. She’s on a redeye.”

Shaw was stunned.

“You think she can actually help?” Soto asked.

“I have a new line of inquiry I’m working on, so it will be good to have her here to work on the profile,” Shaw said.

“What new line of inquiry?”

Shaw told him about the possible religious angle.

“That’s fantastic. We have a serial killer targeting Americans. Mutilating them. Keeping their sex organs as trophies. And now you’re telling me God is telling him to do it all. Just what we need now, to piss off the church,” Soto said.

“Just a working theory; with Alex here, we’ll have others,” Shaw said.

Soto glanced up to the ceiling and began stacking the same papers on his desk again.

“It should come as no surprise that Carillo is livid. He’s gunning for your job, so you better be extra careful here, Eli. I won’t be able to protect you now,” Soto warned.

“I understand,” Shaw said.

“It gets better for you, Eli. You’ve also made a new enemy in Ryan Rieger. Says you went over his head. So watch yourself out there. You’ve surrounded yourself with a lot of political minefields around this investigation. One misstep and your career gets blown up.”

Shaw walked out of Soto’s office. Monge gave him a quizzical look. Sanchez didn’t have the report
